Design for Multiuse Housing Project
Project type
Architecture, Urban conditions, Built Environment
Date
May 2020
Location
Aberdeen
This project was undertaken in the second semester of my second year at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, Scotland. This was an individual project and all the work produced here is my own.
The brief was to explore a current dwelling in the face of the global property crisis and offer potential solutions. I designed a multiuse block that could be inserted into a grid system like that found in Melbourne, Australia. My design aimed to provide adaptability allowing for easy change of unit function. This was influenced by Le Corbusier’s Unité d'Habitation and Moshe Safdie’s Habitat 67. The form of my building was generated by two main factors: environmental conditions allowing for maximum solar exposure and the module that I chose to use for individual units.
It was important to relate separate functions to one another through possible moments of
engagement.
This opportunity for overlap was created largely through the circulatory system. Space for general usage integrate moments of movement and opportunities for pause. There is also a contrast of open and covered areas which helps add unique character to the spaces.
